Żejtun

Traditionally known as Citta Beland and formerly named Casale Santa Caterina after the town’s patron saint, Zejtun lies in the south eastern region of the Maltese island and is home to Barrani Road, St. Catherine’s Parish Church, the most ancient parish in the island given it was already in existence by 1436, as well as the most prominent industrial estate across Malta none other than Bulebel. Neighboring towns include Fgura, Zabbar, Marsaskala, Paola, Tarxien, Santa Lucija and Ghaxaq. Zejtun has garnered a population of approximately eleven thousand by December 2016 even though the number has plummeted slightly over the years. Most residents of Zejtun possess a dialect very akin to the ones of towns within the same region of Zejtun. Zejt iz-Zejtun, an annually celebrated festival in late September during the weekend, celebrates the commencement of olive picking season and pressing of oil. This is accompanied by folk music, dancing and singing and complimentary serving of Maltese ftajjar. Originally celebrated every year on November 25th, the feast of St. Catherine is now celebrated in June. Two rival bands, the Banda Beland and Zejtun Band, play amid this feast. Furthermore, the feast of St. Gregory is celebrated on Easter Wednesday.
