Birgu/Vittoriosa

Also known by its title Citta Vittoriosa, Birgu, forming part of the Three Cities, is an old fortified city on the south side of the Grand Harbour, harkening back to the medieval era. It also lies in the south eastern region of the island.

Birgu played a significant role in the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. The Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Argevines, Aragonese and The Order of St. John were are all involved in the development of the city. Upon the order’s arrival in Malta, Birgu was deemed the capital city in lieu of former capital city Mdina did not satisfy their naval requirements. Most landmarks, namely the Birgu Clock Tower and the Auberge d’Allemagne, suffered extensive damage as a result of heavy bombing in Birgu due to its proximity to the Malta Dockyard.

The Vittoriosa Waterfront was refurbished during the early nineties and has since seen the development of an influx of restaurants and a casino. The parish is dedicated to St. Lawrence of Rome whose feast is celebrated on August 10. The feast of St. Dominic is moreover celebrated on the last Sunday of August.

The first local council election occurred on Febraury 19th 1994 where John Boxall was elected as mayor, superseded by Joseph C. Azzopardi in 1995 until Boxall was re-elected in 1998, 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2012 and has held said position ever since.

Birgu is the neighbor town of Bormla (Cospicua), Isla (Senglea), Kalkara, Zabbar, Xghajra and Paola.
