Santa Lucija is situated in the south of Malta and used to form part of Tarxien, up until July 1961 when it was declared a new centre. The name was taken after the ancient chapel which is situated nearby. Other villages that surround Santa Lucija are Paola, Għaxaq, Gudja and Luqa.
