Għaxaq

This minuscule village, with a population of 4,722 people as of March 2014, located in the south of Malta has a lot to offer.  Ghaxaq is home to St. Lucy’s Chapel, St. Philip’s Chapel, the seashells decorated house (Dar il-Bebbux), Christ the Redeemer Chapel, Has-Saptan, Tal-Barrani, Bir id-Deheb, Tal-Millieri, the annual carnival and feast of St. Joseph and St. Mary, the Ghaxaq Semaphore Tower and the Ghaxaq Music Festival hosted by the St. Mary Band Club AD 1873 featuring artists and groups such as DJ Ruby, DJ Armani, Freddie Portelli, Carl Bee, Joe Brown Band, as well as tributes to Queen, ABBA, Celine Dion and U2. Neighboring towns include Gudja, Birzebbuga, Marsaxlokk, Zejtun, Tarxien, Santa Lucija and Luqa. Ghaxaq is also known for its annual spontaneous carnival.

The St. Joseph is celebrated on the first Sunday of June, whereas The Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady is celebrated on the 15th August. The main parish church St. Mary’s Church, formally known as The Parish Church of The Assumption of Mary, is dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady.

Chronic illness sufferers aged 55 and over are eligible for the vaccination against influenza. Appointments are fixed during office hours upon the presentation of the identity card at a limited time. Public health care centres include St. Philip Pharmacy, opposite the playground and within a walking distance of the school, and Beta Pharmacy, adjacent to the main parish church.

Glass is collected on the first Friday of the month and must be placed in cardboard boxes or plastic bags.

Failure to adhere to this schedule by disposing the wrong waste or taking out your refusals at the wrong time (too early or too late) may result in a fine.

St. Benedict College Ghaxaq Primary School

Formerly known as Filippo Castagna Primary School, this school welcomes kindergarten to Year 6 students. The kindergarten class lasts two years where students subsequently progress to Year 1. Here students grasp rudimentary concepts such as letters, music, motor skills, harnessing creativity skills through arts and crafts, communicating, playing safely, sharing, and reading. The school also organizes outings from time to time. Outings include spring trips to Buskett, cultural outings, visits to the police force and more. Activities include pumpkin carving with parents during Halloween festivities and dressing up in costumes during carnival festivities. The school has also been provided Automated External Defibrillators (AED).
