Bestowed the title Civitas Invicta, as well as Citta Invicta, by Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette as a result of the city’s resistance towards the Ottoman Empire during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, Senglea, the smallest town in Malta which in Maltese is translated to L-Isla, is a fortified city built by Grand Master Claude de la Sengle, lying in the south eastern region of the island. It moreover forms part of the Three Cities in the Grand Harbour alongside Bormla (Cospicua) and Birgu (Vittoriosa). During the era of the Knights of St. John, the city, then known as L’Isola di San Giuliano, served as a hunting area. The St. Julian’s chapel was built in 1311, making it the very first construction work to be carried out in Senglea.
The main parish is dedicated to the Nativity of Our Lady, known as il-Bambina, whose feast is celebrated on September 8th. Another feast is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The city is prominent for the statue of Jesus Christ the Redeemer (Ir-Redentur tal-Isla).
The first local council election took place on March 3rd 1994 where Stephen Perici was elected as mayor of Senglea. The current mayor is Joseph Casha.
To date, Senglea has a population of almost three thousand inhabitants. It had more than 8,200 people during the early 20th century. Senglea was awarded the European Destinations of Excellence for aquatic tourism in 2010. Maltese veteran actor Charles Thake, known for participating in local television series such as the very first Maltese television series F’Bahar Wiehed during the 1970s, Villa Sunset and Misteri tal-Bombli tal-Fuhhar, was born in Senglea. He died in 2018 at the age of 90.
Commuters can get to Senglea from Valletta via boat services. As part of the Cottonera Waterfront rehabilitation project, there is a bridge interconnecting Senglea and Cottonera.
